Among China’s provinces, Guangdong is first in GDP, urban population income, retail sales, exports, imports, and ownership of motorcycles and air conditioners. Hong Kong accounts for more than 65% of all firms investing in the province. It is the economic powerhouse of southern China and the site of the special economic zones Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shantou.
In 1989 Guangdong became the first province to reach GDP in excess of CNY1 trillion. Guangdong enjoyed annual average GDP growth of 13.1 percent from 1978 through 2007. In 2008, Guangdong's GDP was CNY3,679,671 million (US$529,823 million); in 2009 it was CNY3,908,159 million (US$572,121 million). Today it is China’s wealthiest province. Its economy is approximately the same size as that of Turkey.
